Being a dad can be lonely

A lot of dads in Birmingham spend Saturday mornings at home with a toddler and don't know many other fathers in town. The meetup started in December 2025 and has met at the Avondale Library every month since. Most months bring somewhere between five and twenty dads, plus a room full of kids.

Bring the kids

The room fills up with kids playing and reading. Nobody expects a toddler to sit still.

Come and go

Show up late or leave early. Nap schedules win, and nobody minds.

Free, every month

It's one Saturday morning a month at the Avondale Library, and it doesn't cost anything.

Writes Raising Myles as Marc Typo

"This is as much for me as it is for other dads."

Marc is a Haitian American dad who moved to Birmingham and, like a lot of new parents in a new city, found it hard to make friends as an adult. Before his son Myles was born, he started writing him letters. Those letters became Raising Myles, a Substack with thousands of readers around the world, many of them fathers.

In December 2025 he got tired of waiting for a dad group to show up and started one. He hosts the meetup each month and writes a recap for the newsletter afterward, alongside his letters to Myles.

Questions dads ask

What is The Birmingham Dad Meetup?

A free monthly get-together for dads and their young kids in Birmingham, Alabama. The kids play while the dads hang out and talk.

When and where does it meet?

Once a month on a Saturday morning, 10am to noon, at the Avondale Library (509 40th St S, Birmingham, AL 35222). The exact date for each month is posted on Meetup.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. The meetup is free.

Do I have to bring my kids?

Bring them if you can. The whole thing is set up for dads and little ones together, but dads who come alone are welcome too.

Is there an agenda?

No. Show up, say hi, and stay as long as you like. Some months have a theme (one was a pirate morning with sing-alongs), but nobody runs a schedule.

How do I RSVP?

Join the group and RSVP on Meetup at meetup.com/bhamdadmeetup. That's also where date changes get posted.

Who started it?

Marc Pierre, a Birmingham dad who writes the Substack Raising Myles under the name Marc Typo. He started the meetup after moving to Birmingham and finding it hard to meet other fathers.

Come say hi this month

Bring the kids, and a coffee if you want one. RSVPing on Meetup gives Marc a rough headcount.
